During the early morning hours of Sunday, May 31, 2026, DS L. Pallet responded to a residence in Hawthorne located in the 6600 block of SE US Hwy 301 for an armed burglary. The caller told law enforcement they were hiding inside the bathroom because the suspect, 42-year-old James Ivey III, illegally entered their home. They also said they heard a struggle and believed Ivey was battering another victim.

Once on scene, DS Pallett made contact with the victims. The investigation revealed Ivey entered the home through a window, while armed with a pipe. He repeatedly demanded to know the caller’s whereabouts and said he would kill the victim if they did not tell him. Ivey reportedly continued to threaten the victim before taking and throwing their phone. The victim was eventually able to escape Ivey and ran to a nearby business for help.

A short time later, Ivey was located and detained.

A query of Ivey’s criminal history revealed he had previous convictions for the crime of battery.

Ivey was arrested and charged with Armed Burglary, Robbery with a Weapon, Aggravated Assault with Intent to Commit a Felony, and Battery 2nd or Subsequent Offense.

The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office continues to seek answers in the death of 90-year-old Jose Rodriguez, a retired general from the Peruvian Army.

During the evening hours of May 29, 1998, Rodriguez was found in Newnans Lake near the 6000 block of Lake Shore Drive (CR 329B). A witness leaving a nearby park with their family discovered his body in the water and used a payphone to contact law enforcement.

Rodriguez was last seen earlier that day at approximately 5:30 p.m. near NE 39th Avenue, between NE 15th Street and NE Waldo Road.

Nearly three decades later, investigators continue working to bring answers and closure to this case.
