Next week, from July 13th โ€“ 18th, the Alachua County Sheriffโ€™s Office will participate in โ€œOperation Southern Slow Down,โ€ a regional speed enforcement and public education campaign conducted in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

During this initiative, motorists can expect an increased law enforcement presence along I-75, from the Columbia County line to the Marion County line. Deputies will be actively enforcing traffic laws and watching for dangerous driving behaviors, including speeding, aggressive driving, following too closely, and improper use of the left lane.

Speeding is more than a traffic violation. It may feel exciting to go fast, but what seems fun can quickly become deadly. It puts everyone on the roadway at risk. Higher speeds reduce reaction time, increase stopping distance, and make crashes more severe. Our goal is to encourage safer driving habits and help prevent serious injuries and fatalities.

Drivers should also remember that if they are stopped by law enforcement, they need to safely ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ฉ๐˜ต ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜บ and pull as far off the road as possible. Additionally, Floridaโ€™s Move Over Law requires drivers to move over for emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road with their emergency lights activated. If you are unable to safely change lanes,

The consequences of speeding are costly:

10-14 mph over the speed limit: $199 citation
19 mph over the speed limit: $249 citation
29 mph over the speed limit: $275 citation
49 mph over the speed limit: Mandatory Court Hearing
100 mph or 50+ m

A community member wrote a positive message about Deputy Sheriff I. Minck after he helped them with their car. Hereโ€™s what they said:

โ€œDeputy Minck was so professional in handling our case. He made sure we were safe until our tow truck arrived. He was very kind and informative. We so appreciate that.โ€

WE SEE YOU, DS MINCK!
