During the afternoon hours of December 4, 2006, a passerby noticed a black male who looked like they needed medical attention lying on the side of the road in the 11000 block of SE CR 2082 in Hawthorne. The male, later identified as 24-year-old James Edward Tuff, told the witness he was shot. Tuff died due to his injuries prior to law enforcementโ€™s arrival.

On the anniversary of Tuffโ€™s death, we continue to appeal to the public for any information that may help bring resolution to his case.

If you have any information, no matter how small, it could make a difference. Please contact Alachua County Sheriff Investigator Todd Hand at (352) 367-4164 or (352) 756-3308 or thand@alachuasheriff.org, or Alachua County Crime Stoppers Inc at 352-372-STOP

During the early morning hours of Wednesday, December 3, 2025, DS T. Jovic attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a suspicious person, who was wearing a full-face mask and riding a scooter eastbound on SW 20th Ave in Gainesville. Based on the time of night and the manner the subject was dressed, DS T. Jovic wanted to dispel his reasonable suspicion that the individual was possibly involved in illegal activity.

At the sight of law enforcement, the suspect, 20-year-old Adasian Armstrong, jumped from the scooter and fled on foot. During the subsequent foot pursuit, Armstrong refused lawful commands to stop, before being tased in order to gain compliance. Armstrong continued to resist being detained by law enforcement, causing a short struggle before being taken into custody.

A search incident to arrest was conducted on Armstrongโ€™s person. The search revealed an AR-15 rifle loaded with 21 rounds of ammunition, which was located inside of the backpack he was carrying.

Armstrong is a convicted felon and on probation for Possession of a Controlled Substance and Fleeing and Eluding Law Enforcement.

Armstrong was charged with 22 counts of Possession of a Weapon or Ammo by a Convicted Felon, Fleeing/Eluding Law Enforcement, Resisting an Officer without Violence, Unlawful Carry of a Concealed Firearm, Use/Display of a Weapon During a Felony Under Indictment, and Wearing a Mask or Hood on Public Way (Public Order Crimes).
