Unfortunately, we’re seeing yet another scam targeting our community. We recently learned of a case where a victim lost $275 after someone falsely claimed to be with the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.

The caller told the victim that their incarcerated loved one qualified for a diversion program and that a fee was required to participate. Because the loved one had just gone through First Appearance, the story sounded believable and that’s exactly what the scammer was counting on.

Please remember that arrest information is public and available online. Scammers can access this information and may use it to pressure or intimidate families during stressful moments.
We want to be very clear: ASO will never ask for money over the phone, by text, or electronically for a diversion program or any legal matter. If you receive a call like this, it is a scam.

If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts. Don’t send money, and report the incident to law enforcement. Sharing this message may help protect someone else from becoming a victim.
