A Gainesville man has been sentenced to life in prison for sexually battering two juveniles under his supervision.

In 2021, investigators confirmed multiple incidents of inappropriate sexual contact at the suspectโ€™s residence in northwest Gainesville following forensic interviews with the victims.

Mir Aseel was arrested on November 16, 2021, and charged with sexual battery by a custodian and lewd and lascivious battery involving victims ages 12 to 16.

On January 12, 2026, the 66-year-old was sentenced to life in the Florida Department of Corrections.
On November 15, 2025, Deputy Josh Meurer lost his On November 15, 2025, Deputy Josh Meurer lost his confidant, partner, and the best friend to both he and his son, as retired GPD K9 Ranger passed peacefully while surrounded by those he loved.

K9 Ranger served alongside Deputy Meurer during his time as a Corporal with the Gainesville Police Department. Beginning in February of 2018 and continuing through his retirement in January of 2023, Ranger faithfully and courageously protected the citizens of Alachua County. Thanks to Mr. Steven A. Bagan of the Bagan Law Firm, Deputy Meurer had the great fortune of being Rangerโ€™s trusted partner, as the two set out on shift to actively pursue fleeing criminals and rid our community of dangerous drugs.

When Deputy Meurer departed the Gainesville Police Department, he was welcomed with open arms here at the Alachua County Sheriffโ€™s Office, where he has continued to serve our community with honor. While K9 Ranger was no longer patrolling our streets alongside his best friend, he was never far away, spending the remainder of his days in the loving care of Deputy Meurer and his family.

On January 9, 2026, Mr. Jay Nix, President of K9โ€™s United and a trusted leader at the Marion County Sheriffโ€™s Officeโ€”joined by former GPD Sergeant and now ACSO Reserve Deputy Sheriff Charles Owensโ€”presented a special and meaningful canvas depicting K9 Ranger and Deputy Meurer during their time at GPD. Sheriff Scott joined them for the presentation and extended his heartfelt thanks for Deputy Meurerโ€™s continued service and for K9 Rangerโ€™s dedicated service to our community.

Our Sheriff and all of us at the Alachua County Sheriffโ€™s Office extend our deepest gratitude to K9โ€™s United for their incredible support of Deputy Meurer as he processes the loss of a remarkable four-legged crime fighter and a friend beyond all friends.

K9 Ranger, may you rest well. Your assignment here on earth is complete. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’™
