During the afternoon hours of Thursday, March 26, 2026, DS P. Brutus was dispatched to an area hospital regarding a victim who was battered following an incident that took place in the Newberry area.

Once on scene, DS Brutus made contact with the victim, who explained the suspect, 48-year-old Michael Akins, arrived at their home uninvited and unlawfully entered through an unlocked door. The victim and Akins engaged in a verbal dispute that turned physical when Akins started to hit them. The victim yelled for β€œhelp.” Another person in the home came to help the victim break up the fight, using a baseball bat to hit Akins. Akins then stopped attacking the victim and started to hit the other person. Akins reportedly left the residence, but not before arming himself with a sharp piece of metal he found and striking the second victim with it. Akins then got into a red Ford truck and fled the scene.

Law enforcement observed injuries and bruising to both victims, consistent with their statements.

Deputies canvassed the area and located Akins and his truck. Law enforcement observed Akins was engaged in a physical altercation based on his appearance. He was detained and interviewed.

Akins was ultimately arrested and charged with Burglary with Assault or Battery, and two counts of Aggravated Battery With A Deadly Weapon.
Congratulations to Master Telecommunicator Jeanett Congratulations to Master Telecommunicator Jeanette Whitworth on being named Alachua County Fire Rescue’s 2025 Dispatcher of the Year. She received this well-deserved honor during @myacfr annual banquet this past Friday evening.

Ms. Whitworth was recognized for her exceptional performance during a high-risk, armed barricaded subject incident in East Gainesville in July 2025. Throughout the complex and rapidly evolving situation, she demonstrated professionalism, composure, and precision. She documented more than 600 lines of detailed narrative, all while ensuring critical information was relayed to the appropriate units and maintaining clear airtime for emergency responders.

In addition to managing radio traffic, she kept continuous communication with her supervisors and team in the Combined Communications Center, ensuring everyone remained informed without ever losing focus on the incident at hand. Her ability to stay calm, organized, and in control, while providing timely updates and additional intelligence, was instrumental in supporting responders on the ground.

Ms. Whitworth, we are incredibly proud of you. This recognition comes as no surprise to those who know your work ethic, dedication, and commitment to both your profession and the safety of the citizens of Alachua County. Congratulations again on this outstanding achievement! #protectandserve #publicsafety #publicservice #aso #acso #acfr #telecommunications #dispatch #telecommunicator #dispatcher #emergencyresponse #firstresponders #thingoldline #thinyellowline #alachuacounty
