As we begin the countdown to New Year’s Eve 2026, our local law enforcement agencies throughout Alachua County are stepping up efforts to protect the public and save lives. The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, Gainesville Police Department, University of Florida Police Department, Alachua Police Department, High Springs Police Department, and the Florida Highway Patrol will conduct a county-wide DUI Enforcement Detail focused on zero tolerance for impaired driving beginning the night of Wednesday, December 31, 2025 and continuing into the early morning hours of Thursday, January 1, 2026.

The enforcement detail is aimed at preventing alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers from endangering themselves and others on our roads. Deputies, Officers and Troopers from participating agencies will be highly visible and actively monitoring roadways throughout the night.

Impaired driving remains a major traffic safety issue in Florida. According to statewide traffic data - impaired driving contributes to about one in three fatal traffic crashes in Florida.
That sobering statistic underscores the need for enforcement, awareness, and responsible choices during your holiday celebrations.

𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐄𝐓𝐘 𝐓𝐈𝐏𝐒 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐑’𝐒 𝐄𝐕𝐄

To ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration, law enforcement encourages the public to plan ahead and make responsible choices:

✔ Designate a sober driver
✔ Use ride-share services such as Uber or Lyft
✔ Use AAA’s Tow to Go service if your ride plan falls through

• Phone: (855) 2-TOW-2-GO or (855) 286-9246 — toll-free hotline available during major holiday periods, including the New Year’s Eve timeframe.

• Tow to Go provides a free, confidential ride home for impaired drivers — including towing your vehicle to a safe location within a 10-mile radius.

Our goal is to ensure that everyone makes it home safely. Impaired driving is 100% preventable — don’t let poor choices turn a celebration into a tragedy.

During the evening hours of Monday, December 29, 2025, deputies responded to a call regarding suspicious activity at a residence at 6900 NW 44th Pl. When law enforcement arrived on scene, they made contact with the victim and a witness.

The witness told law enforcement they heard a scream outside before observing the suspect, 36-year-old Christopher De Padua, drag an elderly individual by their neck back inside the home. The witness ran outside to help the victim while another nearby person called 911. The victim gave a corroborating statement to deputies. Law enforcement was also able to confirm through their investigation that De Padua has an aggressive history.

De Padua left the scene prior to law enforcement’s arrival but received a call later that same day from the victim that De Padua was back at the incident location.

Law enforcement responded back to the scene and made contact with De Padua, who surrendered himself to deputies before being taken into custody.

De Padua was charged with Battery of a Person 65+ Years of Age and False Imprisonment.
