During the afternoon hours of Thursday, April 9, 2026, Detective A. Wenk responded to a local hospital in reference to a Department of Children and Families investigation involving a child who had been admitted for a potential drug exposure. The child’s primary caregiver was identified as 32-year-old Jalyn Brownworth.

Medical testing conducted by hospital staff confirmed the child had been exposed to methamphetamines earlier that day.

The investigation determined the exposure occurred after the child was given formula prepared with water that had been contaminated. Investigators learned the same water had previously been used to clean needles associated with methamphetamine use.

After noticing sudden changes in the child’s behavior, Brownworth brought the child to the hospital for medical attention and treatment.

The child is in stable condition and recovering.

Brownworth was taken into custody and charged with Child Neglect without Great Bodily Harm. This remains an active investigation. No additional details will be released at this time in order to protect the integrity of the case.

During the late evening hours of Tuesday, April 7, 2026, DS M. Valbuena responded to a residence in the 7700 block of NE Waldo Rd regarding an armed disturbance.

Once on scene, deputies met with the victim, who explained the suspect, 35-year-old James Nickell, came to their home earlier in the day and left. He then returned later in the evening and demanded money. Nickell was armed with a baseball bat in one hand, and gestured to his waistband, stating he had a pistol. He threatened to use the gun on the victim and the victim’s dog if he did not get the money. The victim also observed an outline of a firearm under Nickell’s shirt.

A witness on scene during the incident stepped in and pushed Nickell out of the residence. The victim then called 911, and Nickell fled the scene.

Deputies canvassed the area for Nickell and found him in the area of the 5900 block of NE 78th Ln. After interviewing him, he was arrested.

Nickell was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
