Media Advisory 2020-027: Media Advisory – Jail Death Investigation

At approximately 12:44 a.m. on April 27, while doing routine hourly checks, Detention Officers at the Alachua County Jail located an inmate hanging in his cell and unresponsive. Detention Officers began rendering first aid until paramedics could arrive and transport the inmate to a local hospital, where he ultimately was pronounced deceased this morning.

The inmate has been identified as 34 year-old Nathan A. Keen (7/30/85). Keen was arrested by the Gainesville Police Department on March 13th and charged with two counts each of burglary of an unoccupied conveyance and criminal mischief. Keen’s family has been notified.

A simultaneous administrative and internal investigation have been launched into this incident. Due to these open and active investigations, additional information regarding this incident will not be released until such time as the investigations have been concluded.
