The Detective Bureau is located at the ACSO main building on SE Hawthorne Road. The ACSO detectives assume their investigations from the Patrol Deputies in order to devote more time to significant crimes and enable Patrol Deputies to continue responding to calls for service.
The Detective Bureau is made up of four squads of detectives and one squad of forensic personnel. Each detective squad is supervised by a Detective Sergeant.
This squad conducts follow up investigations on numerous types of violent personal crimes, to include the following: homicides, armed robbery, arson (with personal injury) and aggravated assault and battery. This squad also includes the following specialized personnel:
Cold Case Detective - The Cold Case Detective investigates unsolved homicides and other high impact unsolved cases in Alachua County. This detective’s mission is to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves by seeking answers and justice for the victims and their families.

Firearms Detective - The Firearms Detective investigates the illegal possession, trafficking, sales and purchases of firearms. This detective routinely works with the Gainesville office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and other local law enforcement agencies.
Gang Investigator - The Gang Investigator is responsible for documenting and investigating criminal street gang members and associates. The Gang Investigator is assigned to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Safe Streets Task Force. The SSTF pursues violent gangs through sustained, proactive, coordinated investigations to obtain prosecutions under the U.S. Code, Titles 18 and 21, including violations such as racketeering, drug conspiracy, and firearms violations.
This squad conducts the investigations on crimes that involve victims with special follow-up procedures, to include the following: sexual battery, child abuse, domestic violence and some crimes against the elderly. This squad often works with the following outside agencies, the Child Protection Team, Child Advocacy Center, the Department of Children and Family Services and the Victim Advocates.
Internet Crimes Against Children Detective – This detective is assigned to work with the ICAC Task Force and investigates crimes involving the exploitation of children facilitated by use of the internet. Most investigations involve child pornography offenses and solicitation of minors for illegal activity.
These squads conduct follow up investigations on various types of crimes to include: burglary, grand theft, felony criminal mischief, and financial and economic crimes. These squads also include the following specialized personnel:
Crime Analysts - Responsible for the collection, analysis, and dissemination of criminal intelligence information to all operational components of the ACSO and to other law enforcement agencies.
Sex Offender Detective – This detective is responsible for monitoring sex offenders in Alachua County. The detective regularly checks to ensure sex offenders are living at their registered addresses as required by law and abiding by their court-imposed sanctions.
The Joint Terrorism Task Force is a multi-disciplined group (Law Enforcement, DSTF/JTTF, Fire/Rescue, Communications, Campus Safety, Health/Medical, Emergency Management, Critical Infrastructure, Maritime Security and Public Information) that covers 13 counties, including Alachua, Marion, Levy, Gilchrist, Union, Bradford, Baker, Clay, Putnam, St. John's, Duval, Flagler and Nassau. The Regional Headquarters for its Law Enforcement Component is at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in Jacksonville.
The ACSO assigns a Joint Terrorism Task Force Detective to work directly with the Region 3 DSTF in Northeast Florida.
The Forensics Unit is responsible for the collection, documentation, and analysis of physical evidence identified at crime scenes. The Forensic Unit processes and photographs crime scenes and associated evidence, assists in search warrants, autopsies, and provides testimony in depositions and trials.
Additionally, the Forensic Unit is responsible for maintaining the fingerprint records of all persons arrested in Alachua County.
The Latent Print Examiner processes all requests for latent fingerprint comparisons, from not only our agency, but from the surrounding area agencies as well.
Law enforcement agencies may request a copy of a fingerprint/palm print card free of charge. Fingerprint/palm print cards can be mailed, faxed, or e-mailed.

The Communications Operations Bureau is comprised of the front line Public Safety Telecommunicators and Supervisors who staff the Combined Communications Center on a 24/7 basis. The Communications Operations Bureau is responsible for receiving and processing all calls for public safety assistance or information.
Call Takers answer incoming telephone calls received on emergency 9-1-1 lines, administrative non-emergency lines, and various other sources. These calls are triaged to determine what type and level of services are required. Call Takers have a wide array of informational resources avai lable which allow them to provide the most effective level of assistance required for the situation. Calls are entered into a Computer Aided Dispatch System and sent to Radio Operators who dispatch the appropriate law enforcement, fire, or emergency medical resources to the scene.
Radio Operators serve as the "Air Traffic Controllers" for public safety personnel. There are several radio dispatch positions in the Combined Communications Center. Each radio dispatch position has responsibility for a specific function, such as law enforcement, fire-rescue, or information/support which handles transactions through a national/state criminal justice computer network.
Radio Operators receive calls for service which are entered by the Call Takers. Radio Operators evaluate the information, and with assistance from the Computer Aided Dispatch System, make a determination on the most appropriate type and number of units to dispatch. Radio Operators constantly interact with the many public safety units they are responsible for; deploying them to calls, tracking their status, ensuring their safety, providing additional resources and support, just to list a few.
The Operations Bureau of the Combined Communications Center is truly the "primary focal point" for our public safety system in the city of Gainesville and throughout Alachua County. Beginning with the initial 9-1-1 call for help, and ending when the last public safety unit leaves the scene, the Operations Bureau is the lifeline of our organization and provides critical emergency services our community depends on.
The Technology Support Bureau consists of the Support Services Unit, the False Alarm Reduction Unit, the Information Technology Unit, and the CAD/GIS Unit.

The staff of the Support Services Unit possess a wide array of experience and knowledge in the public safety communications profession and are dedicated to ensuring the Operations Bureau has the necessary skills, tools and resources to provide the highest level of public safety services possible.
The False Alarm Reduction Unit (FARU) was established for the purpose of regulating and reducing the number of false alarms within the City of Gainesville and the unincorporated area of Alachua County. This office administers all county alarm ordinances from one central office housed in the Combined Communications Center, which is located next to the Sheriff's Office.
The CAD/GIS unit is responsible for deploying, maintaining, and administering the Alachua County Sheriff's Office's new computer aided dispatch system which went live April 2009.
The Information Technology Bureau is charged with purchasing and maintaining the computer systems and all peripheral devices throughout the Sheriff's Office. The Alachua County Sheriff's Office computer systems range from desktop computers and related networks to the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system for dispatch of calls for service, as well as communications with many other law enforcement computer systems throughout the state and nation. In addition, the Sheriff's Office deploys mobile laptops for its sworn personnel.
The Information Technology Bureau provides daily support for more than 900 users; completes service requests; keeps up to date all hardware compliance issues and conversions of computer programs throughout the agency.
The Human Resources Bureau primary goal is to enhance the Alachua County Sheriff's Office by hiring qualified law enforcement, detention and civilian support staff that reflects the diversity of the Alachua County community. The Human Resource Bureau aids in the pursuit of professional standards by providing the expertise and best practices in the areas of recruitment, motivation, development and retention of the agency's most valuable resource – high performing personnel. The Records Bureau provides centralized storage and retrieval for all incident and traffic crash reports generated by the Alachua County Sheriff's Office. Additionally, the Records Bureau personnel direct all incoming switchboard calls to their proper location, respond to public record requests, and maintain the Uniform Crime Reporting information for inclusion in the state and national crime statistics.

The Fleet Maintenance section, in addition to maintaining the Sheriff's fleet of vehicles, is also responsible for inspecting citizen's vehicles that have received a safety equipment violation ticket. The vehicle with the deficiency corrected can be brought to the Fleet section at 2621 SE Hawthorne Rd, Monday thru Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. excluding holidays. The vehicle must be presented within 30 days of the date the ticket was written. The 30 days includes weekends and holidays. A $4.00 cash fine is paid at time of inspection and the balance of the fine is paid at the Courthouse. The Sheriff's Office cannot give an extension on the ticket, nor can they inspect the vehicle after the 30 days have expired. The Sheriff's Office will inspect safety violation tickets written by other Florida law enforcement agencies.
The Property/Facilities Unit is responsible for central receiving for all goods delivered to the Sheriff's Office, both at the Hawthorne Rd. and Department of the Jail facilities.
The Evidence Unit takes in and stores case evidence in addition to lost and abandoned property.
To claim evidence, lost or abandoned property, you must have picture ID and proof of ownership. Citizens claiming a firearm must make an appointment with the Evidence Unit to schedule the return of the firearm(s).
Unclaimed property/evidence is either disposed of in accordance with Florida statutes or auctioned on-site or at www.PropertyRoom.com.
If the property was evidence in a case there must also be authorization from the State Attorney's Office before any item can be released.
